Spiritual Footprint--concrete or poop?

I misread a tweet by @randyelrod that said, “What is your DIGITAL footprint?” I must have “spiritual eyes” because I read it “What is your spiritual footprint?

That caught me off guard, actually. Made me stop for a moment and think about the spiritual legacy I may or may not be leaving. How am I living my life and does it affect anything?

Could people look at my life, my journey, my steps (after I’m dead) and actually “see” the affect I had on the world around me? Heck, can they see it when I’m alive?

I hope so. But, what does that mean?

If something leaves a footprint, then it stepped in something, right? I mean, we see it in both concrete and, well, poop. One stays forever, one fades away over time. One shows the print of someone on a journey, in step, going somewhere. The other just means you weren’t paying attention. One leaves a permanent mark, the other dries up.

If I take deliberate, purposeful, and meaningful steps in my life regarding what I do in my home, with my friends, in my community, and in the Church, then there is a good chance someone could trace my spiritual steps in life’s concrete. I’d leave an impression that would last for generations.

But, if I take haphazzard steps in the grass while I’m whistling my way through life with my head in the clouds, chances are I’ll step in some me-centered poop, drag it around for awhile, and carry the stink until I get rid of the poop all together. All I’ll leave are skid marks in the grass.

I mean, let’s face it, no one likes to step in poop and even more people don’t like being around someone who stepped in poop.

Be deliberate. Be focused. Be purposeful. Leave a strong spiritual footprint.

What are you doing to leave a spiritual footprint?
